Emergency Medicine

St. Joseph's/Candler Regional Stroke NET-work

A visit to an Emergency Room is never expected. Knowing that an experienced emergency medicine team is close to home is essential to our community.

At Effingham Health System, our Emergency Department is staffed 24-hours a day, every day of the year by physicians and registered nurses, making advanced cardiac life support available when every second counts.

Effingham Health System was the first designated chest pain center in our district and during the summer of 2009, we introduced our advanced REACH Stroke Treatment program in partnership with St. Joseph/Candler. REACH stands for Remote Evaluation of Acute IsCHemic Stroke. With the use of the REACH technology, Effingham's emergency team can immediately connect with a highly trained and experienced neurologist when a patient is in need. Because of our affiliation to the REACH program, we provide stroke patients with increased availability to distant specialized services, close to home -- and when it means the most.

When You Should Seek Emergency Care

Always consider dialing 911 first when you or a family member is in need of urgent medical care. Medical emergencies are as varied as the people who have them. We most often see patients with the following:

  • Cardiac problems, including shortness of breath and heart attacks
  • Injuries from automobile, snowmobile, motorcycle and other vehicular accidents
  • Injuries as the result of falls
  • Broken bones or other orthopedic problems that result from minor or serious accidents
  • Playground, athletic, workplace and school related injuries
  • Asthma and other breathing emergencies
  • Severe pain and/or bleeding
  • Poisoning
  • Acute psychiatric problems or emotional distress
  • Acute episodes of chronic disease or illness
  • Injuries caused by domestic or other types of violence

For those in need of non-medical emergency primary care, please first consider contacting one of our convenient family medicine practices.
